Surat’s Saree Trade

Surat is India's man-made fabric capital, and the saree is what the city is built on. Roughly 30% of the world's fabric output and about 65% of India's man-made fibre segment comes from here, with close to 60 million metres of fabric made every day, more than 600 processing houses, around 2 lakh shuttleless looms and over 2.5 lakh embroidery and digital printing units. Industry estimates put the sector at around ₹1.5 lakh crore a year and 18 to 20 lakh direct and indirect jobs. This section covers the saree specifically: the fabrics, the work, the markets and the trade practice.
