Digital printing sends the design straight from file to fabric, which allows short runs, photographic detail and fast design changes.
Value addition is a separate trade from weaving and processing. A saree house buys processed fabric, sends it to a job worker for the work, takes it back, and finishes and packs it. Most of this happens within a few kilometres, which is why a Surat house can change a design quickly and hold very little stock.
The city carries a very large base of embroidery and digital printing capacity, which is what allows basic fabric to be turned into premium-looking fashion product at volume.
