Surat’s Wholesale Markets

Surat’s wholesale trade is concentrated in a belt of markets, most of them on and around Ring Road. Each one is a building of hundreds of independent houses rather than a single business.

All 16 markets

How the belt is arranged

Yarn arrives as polyester or viscose filament, is texturised and twisted, then woven into grey fabric on the city's looms. The grey cloth goes to a processing house for dyeing, printing and finishing. From there it moves to embroidery and value-addition job workers, then to a saree house in one of the Ring Road markets, which packs it into a catalog and sells it on to traders across India.
